As you probably well know, the ‘S’ version of the iPhone normally comes with a smattering of minor upgrades. That may not be the case with the iPhone 6S though — and based on what’s being said so far, it is going to make many key improvements across the board.
The probable features that are going to be included are so amazing that many are wondering whether Apple may be ‘skipping’ the 6S entirely and moving straight to the iPhone 7.
iPhone 6S Release Date
While Apple has not officially announced a release date for the iPhone 6S, a leak from Vodafone just hours prior to WWDC 2015 has implicated the 25th of September 2015.
A thing to note is that the last 3 iPhone releases have all taken place in September, so the date is extremely plausible.
Force Touch Display
Update (June 28th 2015): Some reliable source has reported that Apple has started the production of iPhone with Force Touch display.
If the rumors are true, the 6S will come be the first iPhone to come with the Force Touch display that Apple pioneered on its latest Macbooks and Apple Watch.
For those who are unfamiliar with this feature, it essentially senses the amount of force exerted on the screen. In other words, a ‘soft tap’ could produce a different result from a ‘hard press’.
In 2013, iPhone 6 Plus was titled the ‘best smartphone display‘.
Stronger Case and Rose Gold Option
After the (now infamous) bendgate incident it looks like Apple has decided to strengthen its new iPhone with ‘7000 Series aluminum’ cases — the same as what the Apple Watch uses.

Also the option for a rose gold case is almost assured, and it is also suggested that the colors will be closer to that of the Apple Watch in general (i.e. expect a darker version of space grey and a more yellow version of gold too).
New A9 Processor and 2 GB RAM
While the iPhone 6 has been a stunning success, there is no denying that it was lagging behind most other flagship phones in terms of sheer power.
That should be fixed now though — with a new A9 processor as well as 2 GB of RAM.
‘Just 2 GB?’, you might ask. Don’t forget that iPhone 6 — which has only 1 GB of RAM — beat HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 with both withstanding 2 GB of RAM, which is double.
Hence, it’s unlikely that Apple would equip iPhone 6S with 3 GB of RAM.
Better Camera for both Front and Rear
Another area that will be significantly upgraded are the front and rear cameras. The most reliable information seems to suggest that a 12 MP rear sensor is likely, along with an accompanying rear microphone to better record audio for videos.
At WWDC 2015, the iOS 9 code indicated that the front camera will come with a flash and be able to record 1080p video at 60 fps or record slow motion at 240 fps.
Aside from that, there are numerous other changes on the cards, including:
- Slightly larger size and profile due to the inclusion of Force Touch
- Improvements to Touch ID
- Rolled out with iOS 9
- Gesture control support
- Premium limited editions with sapphire cover lenses
Of course, until the official announcement all of this is subject to change. Suffice to say however, the 6S is certainly turning out to be a version worthy of anticipation — and may even ‘morph’ into the 7 due to the sheer scope of upgrades that are headed its way.
We reported that the next generation iPhone will ditch the physical Home Button. The iPhone 6S is reported to be about 0.15mm longer and 0.2mm thicker to include new technologies.
The iPhone 6S could also be available in ‘Rose Gold’ color option in addition to its previous Space Gray, Gold and Black options.
So what do you think? Is this going to be the 6S or 7, and will all these features make it to the manufacturing line or will some be axed?
